While The King's Daughters founded CHKD in 1896 and managed every facet of the clinic, the hospital, the doctors and the facilities, by the early 1980s, the health care needs of the community grew beyond the means of these talented volunteer women. In 1984, The King's Daughters formed the Children’s Health System, Inc. (CHS), to run the day to day operations of the hospital. Today CHS is a networked organization in which partner hospitals, physicians and community services provide children and families throughout the region with uniform, comprehensive services at the most cost-effective levels. CHS is governed by a 10-25 member Board. 30% are King’s Daughters, and the President of The King's Daughters serves as an ex-officio member. The King's Daughters elect their CHS respresentatives annually. At least three CHS Board members are physicians and the other members are elected from the community. The CHS Board meets monthly. Children's Health System provides several community based Health Centers that offer a variety of outpatient services. They are located in Oyster Point, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake. CHS provides medical care through the Children's Medical Group (CMS) that has 100 pediatricians in 15 practices and the Children's Specialty Surgical Group (CSSG) that offers specialty pediatric surgery services. CHS also operates the area’s only comprehensive Child Abuse Program - which served more than 1,000 children last year and is 100% funded by gifts. There is also a Children's Health Foundation that manages the endowment funds for the hospital. It is a 18 member board that meets quarterly. They King's Daughters have representatives on the CHF Board. The King's Daughters remain committed to the mission to provide quality health care to all children and are the largest donor to CHKD.
